The GHG-CCI project is a sub-project of the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) which aims at generating global CO2 and CH4 datasets with sufficient accuracy and precision and near-surface sensitivity to obtain regional CO2 and CH4 source and sinks. SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT and TANSO-FTS onboard the GOSAT satellite are the primary instrument to deliver shortwave-infrared soundings for the retrieval of CO2 and CH4 total columns.

At University of Leicester, we generate GOSAT CO2 and CH4 column retrievals for the climate research datapackage which will be made available to the public after validation and assessment by the user group of GHG-CCI. Here, we present a description of the retrieval used for the generation of the CO2 column data using the 'full-physics' method and of CH4 column data using the 'proxy' method and we will show an overview over the GOSAT CO2 and CH4 datasets and their characteristics.
